thought the whole point of doppelgangers was that they were a separate entity somehow? they would be able to mirror whoever they copied from sight or something less... this, as in, clothing that wears YOU. Inside them.
though I must say the commitment is nice, it's easier and more to-the-point to just CONSUME whatever it is you wanna copy

it doesnt consume the thing its copying. It just needs to consume things in general. Otherwise it cant properly mimic. Its an ambush preditor who lurers in its prey wearing a face that doesnt belong to it.

In fact its preferable not to kill the its mimicking because theres a psychic link allowing them to near perfectly imitate them. but only if they're nearby.
